Benefits of using a Digital Twin in Well Construction

Constructing wells are capital intensive in terms of financial, operational and reputational risks.

Artificial intelligence (AI) will be pivotal in leveraging both historical and new data from drilling operations to generate immediate, accurate and comprehensive insights for improved decision-making.

Digital twins provide unprecedented insight into drilling operations for planning, optimizing and monitoring with advanced analytics.

The technology allows creating a virtual model of the well that is constantly updated with real-time data and helps make dynamic and well-informed decisions. The technology provides a competitive edge for companies that adopt it, in terms of real monetary gains, improved safety and increased efficiency of drilling operations.

Downhole GPS

eDrilling’s inaugural vision was to create a downhole GPS (i.e., Google maps for drilling operations). Convinced AI and machine learning technologies would represent a quantum leap in well construction, it has now become a paradigm shift in the oil and gas industry.

The software employs model-based reasoning in AI and predictive analytics to detect at a very early stage any anomalies, and it provides crew with warnings, notifications and diagnostic messages in good time to make the necessary adjustments. The software includes automated forecasting, forward-looking and what-if analysis, allowing for change in parameters and optimal drilling on the fly.

For example, well control events are avoided, and pressures are managed proactively. If there are potential influxes, the system detects very early indications, which are symptoms of a well control event, and also provide specific recommended actions for the driller to adjust and/or improve the situation. First actions are also provided directly to the control system to change the drilling plan.

Each event avoided will on average save one or more days and thus typically an estimate of 5 MNOK or more in the North Sea. Some operators have reported an increase in drilling efficiency by at least 10% and reduction in complex situations and accidents by 30% to 40%.

People and safety

An internal study researches the value of using digital twins in well construction and drilling operations used in more than 100 wells (to date, this research is continual). The results found that these wells had no hazardous incidents or any non-geological sidetracks, both of which are key priorities and objectives for most E&P companies around the world.

People and safety are the guiding principles when developing the software solutions, and the customers are happy about ridding themselves of the considerable costs associated with having to do sidetracks.

Digital twins represent the biggest opportunity available for performance optimization, avoidance of nonproductive time and hazard prevention in the energy industry.

Sustainability

Last but not the least, digital twins have proven to be a key enabler in improving the scorecard on sustainability for well construction through less carbon footprint by reducing overall drilling time; encouraging and bringing confidence to contactless advisory and collaboration; and its potential application to activities such as geothermal drilling.

Long seen as a temporary measure (due to initial pandemic lock-down), physical distancing habits seem like they are going to stick. Consequently, demand for contactless and/or low-touch activities are on the rise as well as a requirement for mostly all product delivery and services to be less contact and touch.

By enabling remote advisory, remote collaboration and long-distance (team) learning, the eDrilling system answers the challenges of the new world of work and helps ease and accelerate workforce transformation.

Staying the course in these troubled times

In the present circumstances, six months into the COVID-19 pandemic, I wish to take the opportunity to reach out to you directly, to share my thoughts and commitments on digitalization and sustainability in this current world of uncertainty, and in the new normal that will follow.

 

We at eDrilling have been very fortunate, with none of our employees or our close ones being infected by the virus, but also lucky to be able to work closely with customers staying the course as much as humanly possible in this period.  Whilst the pandemic has had mostly negative effects, there have also been a new sense of possibility.

 

Many of our customers have compressed years of digital transformation into weeks or even days, forever altering the way we (and they) think about well construction. The environmental effects that social distancing and lockdown have had, have made many of our customers think of how to sustain these when out on the other side.  These new “realities” have made many of our customers rethink ways in which they are working and have directed attention to transforming traditional workflows to be effective in a sustainable, digital, and lower-touch future.

 

I am forever grateful to our customers during this difficult time, but while we have demonstrated great progress, I think we together can accelerate and be even bolder in our aspirations going forward.

  • We commit to continue to reduce the footprint of drilling Our software allows for the latest in AI and Machine Learning to be utilised on old rigs and installations, with perfectly usable drilling-related equipment, and legacy systems. Moreover, we are helping our customers spend much less time per well, both through performance optimization, as well as the avoidance of non-geological incidents causing need for drilling of side-tracks.

 

  • Our second commitment is to embrace and extend. We are continuing down the path where our customers can reap the benefits of our technologies, without having to rip and replace their legacy software. Providing our software as microservices, we allow you to leverage the investment you have made over the years in legacy software, whether homegrown or industrial, not to mention the time and cost of having to retrain your workforce wrt new.

 

  • Third, we commit to help chart the path to the next normal  We build on 30 years of experience as innovators (as Hitec, we introduced cyber drilling and generic drilling simulator in the early 90s). This year we already started offering Virtual Decision Support (with RTOCs either closed or undermanned), as well as various Virtual Drill Well In Simulator setups (enhancing and replacing legacy DWOP/DIP as well as so-called “immersive” training exercises and simulations).

 

Dating back to the late 80s, we started a journey that have become a paradigm shift in optimizing drilling operations, for hazard prevention, avoidance of NPT and performance optimization. What makes our journey together with all of you even more extraordinary is that we have proven that an open and comprehensive approach has also been a force for a different kind of change as it promotes sustainability in several areas. Preparing for Otta/Vinstra exploration well using digital twin

MOL is preparing for upcoming exploration, by drilling well
3/7-11 S Otta/Vinstra (in PL 539) in wellSim using digital twin prior to
operations.

Rowan Viking is contracted for the well, located in the
southern part of the North Sea, close to the Harald Vest field on the Danish
side, and 45 km east of the Valhall- and Ekofisk fields.  MOL plan to drill the main bore for Vinstra,
followed by a sidetrack to shallower formation Otta.

MOL owns 80% of the field, and Lundin 20%.  Drilling is planned to start April 1st.

Sidetracks, or avoidance thereof, was the focal area of the study, although the study also found that there had been 0 hazardous incidents on the 60+ wells analysed. «Geological surprises» as reason for having to do a sidetrack were omitted. Cuttings build up, collapse, washout, and packoff leading to plugging the well, were included.

We have had 5000+ participants in drill well in simulator prior to operations, with 150+ well specific scenarios. Automated Monitoring and Real time Optimisation is used in all drilling operations. This includes Tripping, Drilling, Casing/Liner operations and Cementing. It is also used in advanced operations like MPD and DGD.

Study show no hazardous incidents, nor any non-geological sidetracks – on wells using a digital twin

 

Executive Summary

We researched 60+ wells where eDrilling’s digital twin technologies was used in i) preparations for well, ii) automated monitoring of well, and iii) real-time optimization of well – or a combination of these – and found that these wells had no hazardous incidents and no sidetracks.

 

Digital Twin

A Digital Twin is the digital representation of your actual well. Used in preparation it enables you to pre-drill your well. Used in real-time operation it enables you to do forward simulations and what-if simulations to detect mismatch and give input to change the drilling plan – to avoid problems, see and detect operational mismatches, and change parameters for optimal drilling (drilling the perfect well).

 

Methodology

We analysed 60+ wells were our technologies had been actively utilised in preparation and/or operation, and where we had correct and sufficient data to conclude on the hypothesis. Of the 60+ wells analysed, 0 – zero – had to carry out a sidetrack. As the software at a very early stage detects anomalies, crews are provided diagnostics messages and notifications in good time to make the necessary adjustments.

Not a prime objective of the study, but included anyways as it continues to be a high priority for us, and for the industry as a whole, was avoidance of hazardous incidents. We are happy, and proud, to say that we had a 100% success rate here too.

Performance Optimization

We did not include performance optimization results in the study. Mostly because we, and our customers, wanted to have the study be as focused as possible, and not try to cover all aspects at the same time. That said, we have had some considerable success stories here too, with a European IOC estimating 19 days saved while drilling a vertical exploration well in the North Sea, as the most prolific.

Team preparing for Tyttebaer exploration well using digital twin

 

The Tyttebaer team is preparing for the upcoming exploration well, by drilling well 34/5-2S in simulator using a digital twin prior to operations.

Shell will use the Saipem semi-submersible Scarabeo 8 to drill the well in the Tyttebaer prospect at 387 m water depth near the Knarr field in June this year. Shell is the operator of this production license (373 S) in the North Sea.
